Just got in from downtown...

Delighted to find a few spirited, rebellious artists starting anew! Those beginning again atop the wet pavement blended the weather-stained street and the soft pastels to create a more painterly look--bright, smooth, and proud!

Lucky, too, to witness Zera the Storyteller perform impromptu for Mondo Marjo on the site of what was Via Musica B!

As of 12:00 p.m., both Sophia and Charlotte Streets are open to vehicles, but the art remains on the street, bucking the bad weather and the tire tread. Take walk, explore the remnants, and vow to return again next year!

The much needed rain has come about eight hours too soon and with regret we have to end our Via Colori this morning. Unless you’re interested in seeing faded drawings – which are kinda cool—or if you left something behind, there’s no need for you to come down this morning.

Thank you so much for making our inaugural Via Colori a success. We are pleased that we could introduce this art form and event to our community.

In the coming days we will report back to you with the details of the success you’ve all helped create.

Via Colori® Fredericksburg Details:

Location: Fredericksburg (Historic Downtown), Sophia and Charlotte Streets, Riverfront Park (please review the map)

Time: September 25, 2010: 10 am-5 pm AND September 26, 2010: 10 am-5 pm

Parking will be available in the public parking garage at Wolfe and Sophia Streets and at the free lots at George and Sophia Streets. Both lots are immediately adjacent to the festival site. Additional parking is at City Dock and the commuter parking lots near the train station. The final option is good ol' street parking throughout downtown. No additional transportation, like use of the trolley or Fred Transit, is planned this year. Always be mindful of any restrictions. Please plan accordingly.

Handicapped Accessibility: If a participating artist has any physical limitations, please email immediately.

For all festivalgoers that require handicap parking, the public parking lots downtown offer such spaces to accomodate. Both William and George Streets will be open to traffic, and therefore might serve as a potential drop-off area for anyone with physical limitations. Please be mindful of the barricades and the large crowd. Your patience is requested and greatly appreciated.

Security: Security is in place for both nights of the festival. The Fredericksburg Police Department will patrol the area regularly, however, artists are asked to secure their work sites to their best ability. Do not leave valuable items at your square. Please report concerns or problems immediately to the information desk. Thank you.

Saturday, September 25

The event opens at 10:00 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. Artists will begin to lay out their paintings. You can watch the first stages of artwork being created.
Entertainment will begin at 10:30 a.m. Look for performing artists in the areas marked Via Musica A and Via Musica B.
Featured Artist, Curtis Goldstein, will create art in a 12x12 square in the center of the festival.
Signature Artist, Gabe Pons, will create Neptune’s Daughter #2 on a 10x10 square.
Via Bambini, a section of the festival dedicated to children, will be an interactive area where children can draw and create their own artwork.
Food vendors, located in the Via Ristorante area marked on your map, will be selling sweet and savory items throughout the two-day event.

Sunday, September 26

The event opens at 10:00 and closes at 5:00.
Entertainment will begin at 12:00 and continue throughout the day.
Featured and Signature Artists will continue to work on Sunday.
Food vendors, Via Bambini will be open throughout the day.

Several Fredericksburg streets to close this weekend for Via Colori arts event

Several streets in downtown Fredericksburg will be closed to vehicle traffic this weekend for Via Colori, a free arts festival.

The 600 and 700 blocks of Sophia Street, between Hanover and Wolfe streets, and the 100 block of Charlotte Street will be closed from 5 p.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Artists will use chalk to create art on the pavement of the closed streets from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

3D technique/3D trouble

Well, the days are passing at a disagreeable speed, and without the necessary experience in the three dimensional artform that is called anamorphosis, Via Colori offers those interested a few links, in place of a tutorial, that we hope will enlighten, if not saitisfy the your 3D hunger. Forgive us, please. Keep reading, though, for an alternative suggestion that is comparable in boldness and maybe easier to achieve.

Street painting in 3D requires study and practice; and, despite extensive research, the technique--this type of creation--should come from a mathematical mind or the appropriate computer software. Please consult the links supplied here in addition to your own research to learn more about this exciting approach to image-making.

For what it's worth, here's a little something about anamorphosis:

Anamorphosis, often called 3D illusion, is an image distortion technique developed in the 15th century. Boasting a skewed perspective that requires the spectator to adjust his/her positioning to uncover a traditional vision, anamorphosis stirs wonder. If perceived correctly, at the right angle, an anamorphic image transforms before your eyes from a flat, distorted representation into a three dimensional form to behold!

Since its invention, many famed artists and architects employed this illusionary technique with great success. Tweaked and adapted over time, anamorphosis continues to entertain today, as we witness in the spectacular street paintings posted here on this Facebook page.

Hans Holbein the Younger made a painting titled The Ambassadors, which remains the most famous example of early Renaissance anamorphic treatment. Today the artform is relishing a revival!

Although we can't give you step-by-step instruction about this technique, we can offer a secondary approach to earning pictorial depth. If you've ever taken a beginner's drawing class, you likely studied something called "perspective drawing." You might now recall the classic example of a road heading toward the horizon. To employ this technique, establish a horizon line, then draw a vanishing point. All lines lead to this point.

Here's an example of classic perspective as used by César Paredes, South American street painter. He created an obvious vanishing point, and plenty of depth to impress.

Street Painting Tutorial: Tips and Techniques

Continue to post under the "Street Painting Tips" discussion topic on the Facebook Page, but for editing purposes, all tips and techniques will be listed here on this blog and in the "Notes" section of the Facebook Page. Please contribute! Amendments are surely to come!

To Via Colori® Artists, thank you for participating! Before we begin, please know that we're all new to this, save for a few exceptions. Via Colori® Fredericksburg emphasizes the experience rather than the product--street painting is ephemeral, afterall. Participants and festivalgoers are invited to explore and relish the area's diverse arts community and the creative process itself. The festival's message is simple: art is important and necessary. With that said, work without worry and have fun!

To all artists, volunteers, performers and attendees, ready yourself for a day in the sun! Wear sunscreen and the proper attire to protect yourself; additionally, if street painting, wear clothing that can sustain the occassional pastel swipe. Please stay hydrated--plan accordingly. Food and drink will be available for purchase at the festival and at the many establishments throughout downtown. Patronize well.

Artists, if you're fortunate enough to have a free-standing umbrella or a canopy, consider setting up shop under your tenting contraption. Equipment suggestions:

-Cardboard to sit and kneel on (as recommended by Curtis), or a comparable material for comfort. Artists will receive a Via Colori® Fredericksburg kneeling pad as a reward for participation!
-Kneepads
-Baby wipes or hand wipes to remove the inevitable remnants of pastel; also, bring a towel to dry your hands.
-A blending tool, such as a cloth rag, or make-up sponge, or rubber fingertips--whatever will aid in blending, if blending is your style. You can blend with your hands, of course, but be aware, skin may tear!
-Tape measure, if using a grid; likewise, a T-square might benefit you, too.
-Masking tape (for sharp lines and separation)

Note: These are mere suggestions. Plan according to your needs and means.
Second, although spontaneity serves some, others prefer a measured path. Let intuition lead you or devise a plan of attack before the festival--it's up to you! Choose or create an image that befits you--something you want to look act, or share with an audience--be it a photo, a sketch, or an existing image. Please remember that there is only one rule: Be responsible when selecting your image--it must be suitable for the Via Colori audience.

Once you've selected your image, choose your path. Curtis recommended making photocopies of the image and placing each copy in a plastic protective sleeve. You

determine how many copies you will need. To take is one step further, mount that sleeved image onto a piece of heavy cardboard, or a clipboard even, to keep the image by your side at all times. If you can provide more than one mounted, sleeved copy, you can use these slick surfaces to lean against when drawing, so as not to erase or smudge work.

Now, let's explore the idea of the grid...

By definition*, a grid is: a pattern of regularly spaced horizontal and vertical lines forming squares, as on a map, used as a reference for locating points. A grid is also a useful drawing aid to an artist who strives for perspective order and accuracy. Reproducing an image to the appropriate scale doesn't require a grid if you're comfortable drawing free-hand; but, to many, this method will help judging scale transfer.

Using a straightedge and a fine tip marker, determine the measurement of your grid. You may want to render your image to fit the square size that you will be working on, therefore a 10'x10' = 10"x10" square. However, if you're working on a 4'x4' square, the inch equivalent may be too small to capture details, so make your adjustments. Don't plague yourself with mathematics--this isn't intended to give you a headache! Try this: Make a 4x4 into an 8x8 or 16x16. Play around. Or, forget the math and just draw!
Make note: If you want to really spotlight the significant details of an image, you can always enlarge those portions of the image to keep as tangential references. Whatever your method of choice, the golden rule for any grid is to keep all squares within equal. Many agree that scale transfer is easiest when each square within your grid measures at least 1/2 inch. It is recommended that you label your grid with ABCs and 123s to maintain organization.

When developing a grid on pavement, use a soft, earth tone that won't pull attention away from the image itself. This color should also wipe away easily.

Where to begin? Surely, this question applicable to the activity of street painting, but it's also pertinent to this post--how to instruct on street painting when street painting will ultimately instruct you?

Via Colori emphasizes the experience, not the product. We must remember that street painting is ephemeral. When preparing for Via Colori, trust yourself. This is not a competition or a platform to scutinize--VCF is a celebration of the creative process and its significance in our day-to-day existence. Focus not on perfection, or imperfection--your work will not last! Experiment, explore and have a good time.

There is no one way to street paint. Style is preferential--from realism to impression to dada-inspired absurdity. Skill is arguably innate and polished by experience; and, beauty is...say it..."in the eye of the beholder." If you like, LIKE IT OUT LOUD! If someone disagrees, respect the opinion and move forward. Let's delight in the diversity! We come together to create and encourage one another!

Beginning your work: an assured line of attack is to start with a focal point. If you aren't the "instinct take the reigns" kind of artist, and you've selected an image to work from, choose a chief detail within your image to serve as the focal point and begin to draw that pivotal section. Establish that part of the image (understanding you can always return with detail), then move above that point and draw it's surroundings. Work top to bottom as a way to preserve your established effort and avoid lifting the pastel off of the pavement and onto your body.

When pressing the pastel to the ground, let your style lead the way. Simple application is lovely (sometimes even the perfect approach) and simplicity can be just as remarkable as a work featuring rich, juxtaposed colors and textures. If you wish to achieve the latter, building pastels is a tested method that secures your square have a pronounced appearance. Begin with a base, as one might with paint, and build atop that base. A foundation of color, or blended colors, fills in the crags natural to asphalt. Once you've secured a foundation, layer colors to add depth to your work. Like paint, each color has an impact on its neighboring color. If blending--be it by hand or tool--know that colors mix to create a new hue and look. That might sound insultingly elementary, but it needs noting. Once mixed, pastels can bleed into other areas of your work and, although pastel is a forgiving medium, your bright, bold details can get lost. Some expert street painters (see those mentioned throughout the Facebook Page) suggest that using complimentary values and hues to create shadow and depth of field is a safe bet. VCF suggests you decide what's best for you! Be as bold as you want to be! As you build your layers, and reach your crowning efforts, consider blending less frequently, letting the final layers stand alone as emphasis.

An addtional tip about use of color and blending comes from Curtis Goldstein: Curtis stresses that the use of black and white pastels should be saved for last! He encourages the use of black and white pastels to be reserved for areas that are clearly and soley black or white and will remain only black or white. Both black and white greatly dull other pastel colors, thereby rendering an image muddy.

A few more suggestions:

-Try masking tape or painters tape for sharp lines

-To draw circles, use a strong string (or the like) to create makeshift compass

-When blowing off your pastel dust, please don't blow into another's square. Thank you. To take that further, always be kind to your artist neighbor and be careful where you step.

-Although more comfortable, tennis/gym shoes lift pastel right off the pavement; but, plastic or wooden heels don't seem to have the same impact. Just be mindful if stepping on your work or the work of others'

-Keep walkways clear

-No open containers, please--insure all drinks with caps or re-sealable lids
-Finally, be respectful of fellow artists, the performers, volunteers, and festivalgoers

In this Q&A, we speak with Mandy Carr, VCF 2010 Performance Chair, about the importannce of performance to Via Colori® Fredericksburg:

Q1.) Tell us a little about yourself, your role as the Performer Chair, and why you joined the VCF 2010 team.

A1.) I was a high school music teacher and currently direct the Voices of the Pops (open to anyone who enjoys singing in a choral group). I find myself doing many music things in the community and enjoy organizing events. I was asked to chair the entertainment part of Via Colori since I have contacts and musical experience. I like giving back to the community and felt like I could help a bit with the exciting premier Via Colori Fredericksburg event.

Q2.) What role does the "performer" play in this festival?

A2.) Although the main focus of Via Colori is on the artists, performers/entertainers will give the community another taste of the "arts community" in the area by providing various types entertainment.

Q3.) Who qualifies as a performer? What is VCF looking for?

A3.) The VCF is encouraging anyone who likes to entertain to go to viacolori, click on Fredericksburg and go to performance artist sign up. We are looking for large groups like churches, schools and community groups. Choral groups, bands, orchestras, drum lines, acting troupes, comedy and dancers, are welcome to apply as well as semi professional and professional soloists or groups. In addition we are looking for magicians, balloon artists, jugglers etc. Anyone who has a talent that would appeal to an audience and has a family friendly act is encouraged to apply.

Q4.) Traditional stage performance aside, is there also a call for roaming performers?

A4.) We definitely need strolling performers of all types. We want to encourage all types of entertainment. Actually we have one barbershop group and a 50's group and could use many more.

Q5.) What should a participating performer bring to the festival? For instance, must a musical act bring his/her/their own sound equipment?

A5.) Some sound equipment will be provided but most bands prefer to bring a lot of their own stuff.

Q6.) Via Colori® Fredericksburg will feature two entertainment stages. We assume that Stage One and Stage Two only differ in location. Will performers be assigned to a stage? Can a performer request a specific time to showcase?

A6.) There are two stages. One is a large stage and one is smaller. Performers can request their preference for the large stage, small stage or strolling. Some stage chairs will also be provided. After performers are notified of acceptance, more info will be given about the logistics. The application gives the entertainers an option for requesting specific times and days (Saturday or Sunday).

Q7.) How long does an on-stage performance last?

A7.) Each of the entertainers can request a 30 minute or 60 minute time slot. This will need to include set up and take down time in addition to performing.

Q8.) What is expected of a performer? (Please include code of conduct and any logistical information here, like age requirements and the tangential chaperone qualifications.)

A8.) All entertainers should have a family friendly act/performance. Conduct should be professional and take into account that all ages will be involved in the weekend as participants or audience members. Anyone under the age of 18 should have an adult as a "chaperone".

Q9.) All VCF participants volunteer their time, service, and art. Therefore, we ask: does VCF require a contract/rider from performers? Will there be an informational meeting for performers, or will participants receive an entertainment packet providing details?

A9.) Performers and entertainers will be given further info when their application is accepted as a participant in Via Colori.

Q10.) Can performers sell merchandise?

A10.) If performers would like to sell merchandise they will need to sign up as a vendor and pay a small fee then they can sell for the entire two day event.

Q11.) Now that we understand what VCF seeks and salutes, how does someone sign up to perform?

A11.) It is easy to sign up. Just go to viacolori, click on Fredericksburg and go to performance artist sign up. Details will be available there as well as the application.

Q12.) Is there anything else we should know about the entertainment at VCF 2010?

A12.) We would like to have all types of entertainment. This will be the time to showcase your talent!!! Come and enjoy the fun at our very first VIA Colori Fredericksburg.

Q&A with VCF 2010 Volunteer Chair

We are happy to turn our attention to Rita J. Snyder again: Rita is not only the Volunteer Chair, but her company, Ritohn Enterprises, is also a Major Sponsor for VCF 2010!

Remember: Via Colori® Fredericksburg exists because of volunteers! From the planning and organizing phase to the management and performance stage, VCF functions solely on volunteer time! Any monies generated from VCF benefit arts education efforts in the Fredericksburg area.

Below is a spirited Q&A with Rita, in which she explains VCF's fundamental need for volunteers...and, mind you, it is utterly necessary! Please read the Q&A and consider offering your time, energy, and service to fund this festival. VCF needs you! Your generosity will not be overlooked! Thank you all!

Q1.) Tell us a little about yourself, your role as Volunteer Coordinator, and why you yourself have agreed to volunteer.

A1.) I am a needle and thread artist and have taught many sewing and lace making classes over the years. I am a closet pianist and amateur artist, dabbling in oil painting, stained glass, pottery, and wood working. I appreciate the arts and love to support art education. I am on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the University of Mary Washington Symphony Orchestra. I have been helping to coordinate the hospitality for the concerts and love being a part of it all. I like greeting the guests and helping to usher. I like trouble shooting and resolving any problems that may arise. Most of all I like to see that the guests are happy.

It was because of my involvement with UMW that I was asked to work on the Via Colori committee and to consider being a volunteer coordinator. I was excited at the prospects of helping to promote and organize an event such as Via Colori, Fredericksburg. I see it as a family weekend where everyone can find something to enjoy. I think it will be amazing to watch the art take shape on the streets and to be a part of helping this event to happen. I’m also looking forward to hearing the performers and visiting the artist and food vendors.

As the Volunteer Coordinator, I have been passing out brochures and sending e-mail blasts in hopes of enticing others to become involved. I check the on-line sign up database every week to see how many folks have volunteered. As we get closer to the date, I will contact all the volunteers via e-mail and coordinate their work load. I will be available to answer questions, field problems, and help in any way needed.

I see this as a fun, fun, fun weekend and I’m excited to be a part of it! Besides, I loved the street artists in Mary Poppins, and this brings out the kid in me!

Q2.) How important are volunteers to Via Colori?

A2.) I can answer this question with an age old question. How important is any one leg on a 3-legged stool? The three legs to Via Colori, Fredericksburg, as I see it, are: 1 – the financial supporters, 2 – the performers, artists, vendors, and 3 – the volunteers. We need the financial support to make it happen. The artists, performers, and vendors are the event. The volunteers orchestrate the activities in order that everything runs smoothly, problems/issues are resolved, and guests can find whatever help or friendly face they may need.
The volunteers will see that the artists get the chalk they need, that questions will be answered, that trash is removed in a timely manner, that weather warnings are broadcast over the speakers, that lost parents are found, that vendors have what they need, that barricades are monitored so the streets are safe for pedestrians, etc., etc., etc.

Besides, all the volunteers will get really cool hats to wear (and keep) with the Via Colori, Fredericksburg insignia.

Q3.) How does someone sign up to become a volunteer?

A3.) Anyone interested in volunteering can go to the Via Colori, Fredericksburg website and sign up to be a volunteer. Click on the volunteer link, select the day and time, select the work assignment of interest, and fill out the form, which includes your name and e-mail address. That’s all there is to it.

Q4.) What opportunities are available to volunteers?

A4.) It’s hard to quantify the gratification one gets from being a part of such an exciting event. It will be work, but it will be the fun kind of work that doesn’t come around just everyday. The volunteers will meet lots of people and will probably find that the time will go very quickly. They will get to enjoy watching the art take shape on the pavement and will get to know what goes on behind the scenes to make such events happen.

Besides, they will get to wear those really cool hats!

Q5.) What is expected of a volunteer? (Please include any logistical information here, like guidelines: age requirements and the tangential chaperone qualifications; volunteer roles/positions, including the operational categories; and how long each shift lasts.)

A5.) We will be counting on the volunteers to help and work the shifts they have agreed to work. They will be expected to show up at their designated time and work the full length of their time commitment.

They will report to the VIP tent and check in. They will receive their hats so that everyone will know who the volunteers are and who to go to for help. We strongly encourage them to wear the hats so that they can be easily recognized as volunteers. Each shift will have at least one (probably more) roaming volunteer to be available to assist me. The rest of the volunteers will have assigned stations or responsibilities. They will be expected to remain at their station for the duration of their shift. If they need help, they can contact the roaming volunteers and we will get them the help they need. Most positions will have at least 2 or 3 volunteers working together.

We have several high school teenagers who have volunteered and we are looking to enlist the help of several scout troops. Each volunteer will be given a sheet of instructions which will help them understand their roles/positions. This information will be presented to them in e-mail form prior to the event as well.

The shifts on the web sign-up sheet are in 4-hour intervals. We welcome anyone who wants to work longer hours. If someone can work for 6 hours, they can sign up for the first 4-hour shift and then send me an e-mail detailing the additional hours they are available. If someone wants to work several full shifts, they can simply sign up for that many shifts on-line. If someone wants to work, but their available time doesn’t fall within the shift times, they can send me an e-mail and I will fracture some shifts to accommodate their schedule.

Bottom line: We want your help! We will accommodate you in any way we can, so please just let me know when you are available and where you would like to work and we will do the rest!

Q6.) Can a volunteer sign up for more than one position?

A6.) Absolutely – a volunteer may sign up for as many positions as they like. If they want to work all day both days – yeah!!! If someone would like to work as a stage hand for one shift and as a barricade monitor during another shift, that is perfectly acceptable. It will be difficult to split responsibilities within one shift, but multiple positions in multiple shifts are certainly welcomed.

Q7.) Can a person sign up as an artist or performer and still volunteer to assist in festival operations?

A7.) Yes, a person may sign up as a performer or artist and still volunteer. The performer/volunteer is easy to accommodate. The artist/volunteer has some considerations. Since it is expected that the artist will take all day both days to complete their work, it may be difficult to be an artist and a volunteer. However, often artists work in groups, therefore allowing some free time to the artists while their colleagues are continuing the art work. In this case, it will be easy for the artist to also sign up as a volunteer for a shift.

We also welcome family artists. What a fun experience for a family to paint a square together. Perhaps one member of the family would like to volunteer for a shift while the other family members are painting.

We welcome all sorts of creative configurations. Just let us know how you would like to participate/help and we will do the scheduling!

Q8.) Other than fulfillment of the heart, how does a volunteer benefit?

A8.) Remember – volunteers get those really cool hats! :)

It can be very rewarding to help behind the scenes of a big event such as Via Colori. It is also an opportunity to work in a group and learn some things about stage management, vendor management, finding lost parents, fielding questions, crowd control, etc. Until you work as a volunteer, it is hard to understand the magnitude of logistics and organization that is involved in putting on a festival type event – what a fun way to gain knowledge!

Q9.) Will there be organizational meetings preceding to the festival?

A9.) We are still finalizing the plans, but at the moment no major organization meeting is scheduled. We will be communicating via e-mail with all the volunteers. The VIP tent is where the volunteers will report prior to their shifts, so we will be available to answer any questions or concerns they may have. We (the steering committee) are always available via e-mail for answers. We will also make phone calls or meet with folks prior to the event if a meeting is desired.

If a group of folks (for example a church group or service organization) is interested in volunteering, we will be happy to come meet with your group, provide a slide presentation, answer questions, etc. to satisfy whatever concerns you may have. Just let us know that you would like us to come speak to your group and we will be there!

Q10.) Is there anything else that we should know about being a volunteer for Via Colori?

A10.) We really need your help. We love our volunteers and are anxious to have you work with us and experience a really fun time. Please consider sharing some time by being a volunteer.

Many may know that local artist/educator/entrepreneur Gabriel Pons has been selected as the "Featured Artist 2010" for the Fredericksburg Via Colori® festival! His work, "Neptune's Daughter," is the VCF 2010 official emblem. Come the weekend of September 24-26, 2010, you can catch Gabe in art-making action as he re-creates "Neptune's Daughter" on the City's street!

To understand a little more about "Neptunes Daughter" and the artist himself, Gabe agreed to participate is a VCF Q&A exclusive! Please take some time to read about this thoughtful artist's journey:

Hi, Gabe! Thank you for agreeing to this interview! Thank you more for allowing VCF to use "Neptune's Daughter" as the face of the festival.

Q1.) Please tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from and how did you become an artist.

A1.) I’m 35 years old - a child of the 1970’s born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. My mom is a retired school teacher and my dad is a structural engineer. My older brother was a big influence both in terms of the music that he exposed me too as well as skateboarding. Although he didn’t express any aspirations in "doing" art – he was really creative. It was my father and his co-workers who encouraged me to study Architecture at Virginia Tech. In the beginning of college, my art endeavors were relatively private and I worked only in sketchbooks experimenting with watercolor and collage. When I traveled throughout Europe in 1995, I ended up in more art museums rather than at the architectural sites. While working in the architecture profession, I allocated more and more time to painting. It wasn’t until we moved from NewYork City to Fredericksburg that both my wife and I took what we were doing to the next level. Our studio at LibertyTown Arts Workshop and my affiliation with Art First Gallery was the starting point of our new career trajectory.

Q2.) Why did you come to Fredericksburg?

A2.) Scarlett’s family is here and we wanted to raise our children close to family. In a sense, both Scarlett and I wanted to flip our schedules and turn our day jobs into what we really loved doing – and that was painting and ceramics. New York City is great, but we knew our lives would be much better off working in a smaller community.

Q3.) Where did the idea of Ponshop originate?

A3.) In 2004 we took a small business class workshop (Workshops In Business Opportunities WIBO) in Harlem, NY and that helped us formulate a strategy to this next step. PONSHOP as the name goes, came to mind, and it fit – we’re a family business that offers up a variety of eclectic art in different forms.

Q4.) "Neptune's Daughter" is a strong image, and we're proud to use it as our official emblem! How did you come to make this piece?

A4.) Actually, it was made earlier in 2010 for a portraiture themed show at Art First Gallery. I’ve always enjoyed portraits that seemed to stare back at you and I wanted to project a sense of hypnosis when one gazes at it. I love the "Pixies" album Doolittle, and one of their lyrics mentions Neptune’s daughter and that evoked in me an image of a sea goddess - so I just went with it.

Q5.) Explain your technique. (Please include a brief mention of materials involved, thank you.)

A5.) I keep a library of collage materials at my studio and go through it to generate ideas. I usually start by developing a figure in pencil drawings that later become stencils mad from heavy paper. Coincidentally, I’ll be building collages or casually painting with acrylics on several canvases. Once my stencils are drawn and cut, I’ll finalize my background and use spray paint to apply the stencil design. After that, if I’m happy I stop, if not, I’ll attack it until I am.

Q6.) You mentioned that The Pixies' song "Mr. Grieves" inspired "Neptune's Daughter," so we ask: generally, what inspires your artwork?

A6.) I get a lot of my inspiration from music and film. Albums and their artwork that I grew up with (Iron Maiden, Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy) influenced my aesthetic. These days, I’ve been taking a lot of historic icons and reinterpret them.

Q7.) As a skateboard devotee, how does your skateboarding culture play into your art?

A7.) Skateboarders are really perceptive to the built environment – we have a different way of evaluating everything from stairs, curbs, benches, and loading docks. A skateboarder experiences a city street in an entirely different way – turning the mundane into something monumental. The parallel between design and skateboarding, to me, was pretty explicit even back when we were in architecture school. Skateboarding can be very technical and requires a lot of concentration and guts. When you make a mistake, you’ll pay for it with your body. It’s that kind of attitude that sets skaters apart – you soon realize that you’re responsible for your actions, but the gratification is that much bigger when you take risks. Likewise with design, you have to be willing to keep practicing, and build upon the fundamentals that you’ve mastered. Once you do that, the opportunity for creativity and improvisation increases ten fold. Skateboarders are comfortable suspending fear and I think that’s a quality which would benefit any artist.

Q8.) Your methods speak to this culture not only in style, but also in the application of materials. There appears to be an external (possibly illusive) freedom to your approach. Can you speak more to this?

A8.) I am actually a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to making art. For instance, I’ll spend hours doing hand drawing development sketches and even more time on the computer designing a stencil, but at the same time, be painting casually, or having fun with paper and glue. There’s a dual-sided methodology to my work where I have to "construct" something with precision and at the same time destroy a piece with paper, water, and paint to bring it to the next level.

Q9.) In your work, there's an obvious building and adaptation of materials to a central idea, much like the practice of architecture. In past series, there are even physical references to classical, stately forms of architecture, like columns and pagodas--for what it's worth, a far cry from "Neptune's Daughter". Can you tell us how your education and professional work experience in architecture influences your work, even when the piece doesn't reference classical architecture as we know it?

A9.) In terms of architecture I’m actually a modernist at heart - but over the past years, I’ve been referencing classical models in an effort to relay a sense of otherworldliness with the spaces I’m showing. My experiences studying architecture overseas during college affected me greatly, and it wasn’t until I was working for an architecture firm in New York City (we did a residential project which included remodeling an upper east side townhouse with classical interiors) that I really appreciated the discipline of classical architecture. I learned a lot about proportion and giving a proper sense of scale and publicity to a space and that indirectly affected my approach to painting. The process of architectural design is one of reflection and immersion. By that I mean that one has to surround themselves with all the issues: structure, space, form, environment, in order to develop a strong design. After you immerse yourself in all the issues, you step back and let things "simmer". When you return the project, hopefully you’ll be able to see even a better solution. Likewise painting for me is that activity of intense activity that presents potential. When I return to work, I approach it hopefully with a better understanding of what it could be.

Q10.) One more question about inspiration, and this one is for the Romantics out there: Both you and your wife decided that Ponshop should be a place of education as well as a studio and retail space. Your wife and partner Scarlett appears frequently in your work. How does living, working, learning, and growing with your wife everyday make its mark on your work?

A10.) In a sense, we’re inherently connected to each other’s work now more than ever. Honestly, I attribute Scarlett as the one who truly propelled me into painting. It wasn’t until I met her that I was so motivated to commit to art. In fact, in the summer of 1995, I started a collage book which chronicles a lot of what we experienced during our first years together as a couple. Being both architecture students, we had a mutual respect for one another’s work ethic. Scarlett’s love for ceramics was evident even during her third year of college. We’ve been approaching landmarks in our lives (Weddings, Holidays) as extensions to our artistic lives – from designing our own invitations to creating Halloween costumes for the family. Our 4-1/2 year old son Diego is testament to this. He’s making things on a daily basis, and in a lot of ways reminds us of the freedom and joy of art.

Q11.) Once inspired, how do you start a piece?

A11.) I actually do a bit of research, either online or in the library. For instance, when I did the Neptune’s Daughter piece, I poured over stacks of national geographic magazines looking for images of fish swarming in circles or simply for different color values of blue to work from.

Q12.) Do you know where your work is going once you begin, and do you leave room for impulse?

A12.) In some respects, I have an element, usually a figure or face that has be resolved formally, but other than that I think the best paintings are ones that seem somewhat effortless in their construction. The stenciled paintings obviously are heavily planned, but once I start painting, I can resume experimenting with color and composition.

Q13.) As mentioned, some work features identifiable, classical structures as a focus, but the pictorial framework and atmosphere is sometimes seemingly cataclysmic and apocalyptical. Do you consider your work a conversation or commentary on something, or do the images you make stand alone and encourage personal interpretation?

A13.) I do think about and enjoy futuristic visions of a landscape that is in a "beautiful" ruin. For instance, I think visiting archaeological sites is fascinating in the sense that we’re still trying to piece together the story of what happened to bring to ruin such a great civilization. Perhaps thousands of years (or even ten years) from now, there will be people picking through our wrecked world wondering what happened.

Q14.) Back to the Via Colori® festival: Is pastel a new medium to you? Do you have a plan for re-creating "Neptune's Daughter" onto pavement, or must we wait to see? (Spray paint is forbidden, my friend.)

A14.) I started using oil pastels in collage while I was in college, but honestly, I haven’t touched them in years. I’ve been meaning to break then out soon, and I guess the Via Colori project is going to motivate me to do just that. I have been strategizing to recreate the image and it may take doing a full-size stencil template of some sort. In a way, I look at it as a great opportunity to take an idea which was initially executed using a street art technique (stencils and spray paint) and then bring it back full circle where it actually will be a piece of art scaled to the pedestrian public.

1.) What is Via Colori®?

The Fredericksburg Arts Commission announces The First Annual Fredericksburg Via Colori® September 24-26, 2010! Via Colori® is the modern day version of a centuries-old tradition in which volunteer artists create large scale pastel drawings directly on the pavement of our city's streets. Via Colori® is a new and singular event which raises funds for arts education efforts in the Fredericksburg area. http://www.viacolori.com/

2.) Where do I go to sign-up?

To sign-up as an artist, performer, sponsor, or volunteer, go to http://www.viacolori.com/. On the left side of the Via Colori homepage there is a listing of participating cities. Click on "Fredericksburg" and scroll down the page to find the sign-up links. When registering as an artist, the principal artist must be a responsible adult.

3.) Where is this festival taking place?

This event is located in the historic downtown of Frederericksburg, specifically along Sophia and Charlotte Streets, in addition to Riverfront Park. We will post a map of the festival soon, which will include the delineated areas for art, stage, marketplace, and the Via Bambini enclosure.

4.) Do I have to pay a fee to participate as an artist?

No, this is a free event. You will only pay for food and drink, if you choose. Additionally, all artists will be supplied with free materials, including environment-friendly pastels and the proper accoutrement.

5.) Do I have to be a resident of Fredericksburg to participate?

No, everyone is welcome! Anyone can play--from our neighboring counties to other countries! The festival is open to locals and globetrotters alike.

6.) Who can be an artist?

"Artists" qualify as any person, of any age, and any skill level. No matter your occupation, your experience level, or your caliber of artistry, you are welcome to participate! Artists may work as individuals or together as a group. Families of Fredericksburg, we want you, too! This is an event for everyone! Please note: when registering as an artist, the principal artist must be a responsible adult.

7.) I don't want to work alone. Can I work with friends as a group?

Of course! Collaboration is encouraged! The only rule remains that artists have no commercial interests and do not make paintings boasting logos or trademarks. Again, these squares are not for advertising--sponsors will have signage at their squares.

8.) Can I choose to paint more than one square?

Yes! If you have the energy and vision, go for it! We only ask that you fulfill your obligation to your adopted squares.

9.) I've signed up as an artist, so what can I paint?

The images come from the artists themselves--no themes, no commercial interests, no obligations to sponsors. There are no limitations to your vision; however, the content must be appropriate. This is a public event open to everyone, so please mind the children. Pastel is a forgiving medium, but don't make us get out the pressure washer. Keep responsibility in tact, but let the imagination fly.

10.) I want to participate, but I don't know anything about street-painting.

Via Colori® is an event honoring the creative process, and part of that process is experimentation. Experimentation is an education in and of itself, so be not afraid. Artists may be of any caliber and any experience level. There is no pressure to perform or perfect--just have fun! Exercise your fun. The Via Colori® Fredericksburg festival invites everyone to explore the indispensable, very necessary and celebratory practice of art in our community, and, to step to greater heights: our lives. We have so many artists living, working, and creating in our region, it is time to celebrate! Plainly put, art is important; and, preservation of the practice is essential for the culture at large. All monies acquired from sponsorship are donated to arts education efforts in the Fredericksburg area.

What's more, everyone has the opportunity to attend a workshop hosted by acclaimed international street artist Curtis Goldstein in late August. This workshop is not only FREE, but also a hands-on interplay with free materials and street-painting tips. To participate, you must register in advance. 11.) What materials are suitable for street-painting?

All materials are provided! We have selected eco-approved pastels, remarkably fabricated to protect the nearby watershed. Materials will be distributed at the kick-off event on Friday night. The pastels we supply are the only media allowed on the street, so please abide. The act of street-painting does not begin until Saturday morning.

12.) Who are the sponsors?

We have two categories of sponsors: those who donate a larger sum to the festival itself, and those who sponsor a square. We are currently accepting sponsors through http://www.viacolori.com/. We will propogate a list for you and announce the sponsors by the end of the summer.

13.) Will I know who is sponsoring my square?

Yes, you will learn at the kick-off event on Friday night, September 24, 2010. You have no obligation to this sponsor commercially. Again, these squares are not for advertising--sponsors will have signage at their squares. We ask that you do not incorporate any commercial logos or trademarks in your work. Also note that you cannot request a specific sponsor. All sponsors are assigned in advance.

14.) I'm a professional artist. Can I promote or sell my work at the festival?

All artists who wish to take advantage of this opportunity for exposure may advertise their work in the form of business cards and announcements at their square(s). If you wish to sell your work, you must buy into the Artist Marketplace and provide a representative to sell your work as you draw. For professionals, the Marketplace requires a nominal fee to include city business registration fees.

15.) What is Via Bambini?

It's all in the name. Via Bambini will serve as a children's corner during the festival, located near the parking garage off of Sophia Street. While families and kids can work together on the squares stretching across Sophia and Charlotte Streets, there is also an allocated section for small children to draw. We will have accompanying experienced instructors to lead the project. More information on Via Bambini to come!

16.) Will there be food and drink available to purchase throughout the festival?

Indeed, we have selected a diverse body of vendors prepared to serve you global cuisine. You won't find carnival foods here! We are contracting notable restaurants to provide a sampling for every taste.

17.) What is the schedule like? Are we to work all three days?

The event kick-off is on Friday night. Here you will pick up your materials, mingle and enjoy; there will be no art-making on Friday night. On Saturday morning, 10 a.m., the painting begins. We encourage you to work both Saturday and Sunday. Take your time. Take frequent breaks and peruse your fellow artists' work. We aren't emphasizing the "end result", we want you to relish the experience. Remember, street-paintng is ephemeral--come the following week, the art will disappear. 18.) Hey, what if it rains on the weekend of September 24-26?

We are hopeful for good weather! Stay on our side, send out the hope! We currently have no alternative date in case of inclement weather; however, we do have a rain delay plan in place. For now, we need not worry.

An open letter from the Director of Via Colori® Fredericksburg

Dear Friends,

The Fredericksburg Arts Commission is presenting Via Colori Fredericksburg on the weekend of Sep 24-26, 2010. This first-time ever festival will focus on street painting along Sophia Street and Riverfront Park with over 100 artists in the greatest act of spontaneous creativity ever to occur in Virginia! We’re planning for two stages, a children’s area and multiple opportunities to both watch and participate in this celebration of art.

Imagine a bright, fresh Saturday morning when a couple hundred artists come simply to create for a good cause. A hush falls over the morning as they each kneel on the pavement. They sketch their outlines and ready their colors as entertainment begins to echo through the festival. The act of creation has begun.

Via Colori Fredericksburg will provide the equipment and the location, the public will attend to watch and marvel at the diversity of art in front of them and we’ll all laugh and enjoy a beautiful weekend in celebration of the incredible talent of our region.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are looking for four specific groups of volunteers to make this program a huge success:

1. Artists – fine artists, families, beginners and anyone willing to give it a try are invited to join us by signing up to paint 4x4, 6x6 or 10x10 squares.
2. Sponsors – businesses are asked to sponsor the squares at the $100, $250 and $500 levels in exchange for unbelievable exposure with signage and Free Lance-Star mentions. Those wishing for maximum exposure should contact us for higher level of sponsorships available.
3. Performers – we want to celebrate the regions experts and lesser known performers as well with half hour and one hour slots on two stages and multiple opportunities for roaming entertainers.
4. Volunteers – two hour positions are available in a variety of options ranging from staffing our information booth to assisting with security overnight to hands-on experience being a stage hand.
